Therapeutic Recreation Program

Recreation staff and volunteers provide a varied and stimulating individualized activity program designed to meet the needs of each patient. Children participate in individual and group sessions with the goal of maintaining quality of life and to improve health and well being through recreation experiences. Recreation opportunities include arts, crafts, music, outdoor experiences, sensory stimulation, reading, games, cooking, gross and fine motor activities, socialization and community trips as appropriate.

Caring and Sharing Enrichment Program

The Hospital for Special Care on site Child Care Center and the Department of Pediatrics have collaborated to create an ongoing, voluntary program promoting the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and developmental growth of children on the Pediatric Unit and those attending Child Care Center. With parent approval appropriate pediatric patients spend time with our child care population either in the Child Care Center or on the Pediatric Unit. This program allows our pre-school age patients to learn by modeling their peers and also promotes understanding and acceptance of children with special needs among our child care population.

Garden of Hope

An area of the unit has been transformed into a very special environment where children can learn and grow in a safe, fun, and developmentally appropriate play area. This area fully developed. It includes a sensory stimulation room as well as areas for arts and crafts, reading and other fun activities that promote development and socialization. 

Community Activities

At the time of discharge families are made aware of many community resources and activates available to all children and families, such as support groups for parents and camps and sports activities for children.


Education Services

Education is an important part of every child’s growth and development. Education will be provided based on each child’s needs.

On-Unit Education

From birth to age three children have a greater capacity to learn and develop. Resources will be provided to families and, when appropriate, supplement this with Birth-to-Three providers from the community. These same providers will assist with childrens’ transitions home to be sure that Birth-to-Three services are continued without interruption. The link to the Birth-to-Three website is:

Community Schools

If children require prolonged hospitalization, are over three years of age, and are well enough to go to a community school, we will arrange for them to attend school in the child’s community. If the community is too far away, then attendance at a community school near the hospital can be arranged. We will arrange for a tutor to come to the hospital for children who are unable to travel and those who will be with us for a shorter time.
